Early Life
On November 7, 1867, Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland. She and her four siblings grew up under the thorough tutelage of their parents, both teachers.

Their family suffered a devastating blow when Marie’s sister, Zosia, contracted typhus and died in 1874. Tragedy struck again when she lost her mother to tuberculosis in 1878. Marie mourned these losses deeply, coping by turning to her studies.
